Hume 7009   Leave a comment

Named after philosopher David Hume who was an imperialist.  Hard imperialists believe that there is no evidence for the existence of reality and that causality cannot be proven.  Reality is subject to one’s perception and thus it cannot be measured or analysed as all perceptions of reality are products of the mind. Hard imperialism states that reality as we know it cannot exist, from a modern understanding as in colour touch and taste are all electric signals sent to the brain whether or not we are experiencing a shadow of reality designed to aid biological survival is of equal probability to the idea that we are a highly complex computer programme.

Sokretes 5450   Leave a comment

Named after Socretes whose famous  Euthyphro dilemma was; is the pious loved by the Gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is loved by the Gods?  This simple question has had major influence on monotheist religions and Christianity in particular.  “Is what is morally good commanded by God because it is morally good, or is it morally good because it is commanded by God?”  This question is particularly relevant today in regards to Gay marriage, as it say if its wrong according to your God just because he doesn’t like it, it means God is morally arbitary and not omnibenevolent and thus irrelevant.

Plato 5451   Leave a comment

Plato’s analogy of the cave is his most famous philosophical analogy.  Plato’s analogy is that we are all chained facing the back of a dark cavern, with images (shadows) from a fire projected in front of us which seem real and is the only reality the individual can conceive of but are in fact deluded in their perception of reality as the images projected are shadow puppets used to control perception.

In an age of mass media this analogy takes on a greater meaning as we are all subjected to half truths and propaganda continuously.

Karl Marx 2807   Leave a comment

Karl Marx was a philosopher whose writings with Engels created modern Marxism, the ideas of Marx and Engels existed before Marx but he helped explain how a Marxist revolution was inevitable within society the minute the proletariat realised the bourgeoisie were surplus to requirement and described the conditions under which this would take place.  The end point of Marxism is anarchy, the dissolution of the state and the political elite as only then is true equality achieved. Hitler in ‘Mein Kampf ‘stated that true democracy ultimately leads to Marxism – Sarah Palin’s redistribution of the money made by oil companies to the Alaskan population in compensation is the reason why she enjoyed an approval rating over 80% regardless whether the population agreed with any other of her policies even though right-wing it is the most socialist policy ever put into action by an American politician.

Marx’s view of religion especially organised religion was that it was a symptom of a disease which is the capitalist neo-feudalist system.  Religion is a means to distract people from their suffering by diverting their attention and desires towards an afterlife where all the wrongs of society will be righted instead of correcting society’s wrongs in this life.

Kant 7083   Leave a comment

Emmanuel Kant was a philosopher whose writings created a field of ethics known as Kantian ethics. Basics of his ethics are: one must not treat an individual as a means to an end but rather as a means in themselves, there is nothing which is truly good except good will which is the adherence to ones moral duties regardless of egotistical concepts and other such factors, moral codes should be universal meaning applicable in every situation regardless of context. He also believed man could work out what was moral without being dictated to by the state or the church.

Nephthys 287   Leave a comment

The origin of the goddess Nephthys is unclear but the literal translation of her name is usually given as “Lady of the House,” which has caused some to mistakenly identify her with the notion of a “housewife,” or as the primary lady who ruled a domestic household. This is a pervasive error repeated in many commentaries concerning this deity. Her name means quite specifically, “Lady of the [Temple] Enclosure” which associates her with the role of priestess.

“Ascend and descend; descend with Nephthys, sink into darkness with the Night-bark. Ascend and descend; ascend with Isis, rise with the Day-bark.”

Pyramid Text Utterance 222 line 210

Jessica Levai notes, ‘while Nephthys’s marriage to Set was a part of Egyptian mythology, it was not a part of the myth of the murder and resurrection of Osiris. She was not paired with Set the villain, but with Set’s other aspect, the benevolent figure who was the killer of Apophis. This was the aspect of Set worshiped in the western oases during the Roman period, where he is depicted with Nephthys as co-ruler.’

It is Nephthys who assists Isis in gathering and mourning the dismembered portions of the body of Osiris, after his murder by the envious Set. Nephthys also serves as the nursemaid and watchful guardian of the infant Horus. The Pyramid texts refer to Isis as the “birth-mother” and to Nephthys as the “nursing-mother” of Horus. Nephthys was attested as one of the four “Great Chiefs” ruling in the Osirian cult-center of Busiris, in the Delta.

Nephthys was also a beer Goddess and this may go somewhat to explaining her title of Lady of the temple as beer was often drank at festivals and rituals.  Nephthys is a goddess who gives the Pharaoh power to see “that which is hidden by moonlight.” This fits well with more general textual themes that consider Nephthys to be a goddess whose unique domain was darkness, or the perilous edges of the desert.  Nephthys was considered the unique protectress of the Sacred Phoenix, or the Bennu Bird. This role may have stemmed from an early association in her native Heliopolis, which was renowned for its “House of the Bennu” temple. In this role, Nephthys was given the name “Nephthys-Kheresket,” and a wealth of temple texts from Edfu, Dendera, Philae, Kom Ombo, El Qa’la, Esna, and others corroborate the late identification of Nephthys as the supreme goddess of Upper Egyptian Nome VII, where another shrine existed in honor of the Bennu.

the Bennu was a self-created being said to have played a role in the creation of the world. It was said to be the ba (soul) of Ra and enabled the creative actions of Atum.  It was said to have flown over the waters of Nun that existed before creation, landing on a rock and issuing a call that determined the nature of creation. It was also a symbol of rebirth and was therefore associated with Osiris.

Nephthys in the natal chart is associated with nurturing potential, seeing what is unseen i.e. potential talents and gifts still undiscovered and hidden from view that just need time and practice to develop and ripen where Isis creates Nephthys nurtures to fruition.

Nephthys in aspect to Sun indicates strong nurting nature and patience in dealing with children especially.

Osiris 1923   Leave a comment

Coppicing is an English term for a traditional method of woodland management which takes advantage of the fact that many trees make new growth from the stump or roots if cut down. In a coppiced wood, young tree stems are repeatedly cut down to near ground level. In subsequent growth years, many new shoots will emerge, and, after a number of years the coppiced tree, or stool, is ready to be harvested, and the cycle begins again.  Coppicing maintains trees at a juvenile stage, and a regularly coppiced tree will never die of old age — some coppice stools may therefore reach immense ages. The age of a stool may be estimated from its diameter, and some are so large—perhaps as much as 5.4 metres (18 ft) across — that they are thought to have been continually coppiced for centuries.

The story of Osiris is one of coppicing where we are cut down and torn to pieces only to be reborn and form new shoots of life.  It is a story that is familiar to us all for it is the story of rebirth through trial, that strengthens our roots and gives us a strong foundation from which to start again.  Osiris in the natal chart represents growth and strengthening through trial and tribulation.
