Last Kiss from Neptune – Neptune in aspect to the Sun Part 2   Leave a comment

The universe is a violent place, it takes the violent death of a star to create the elements that created our planet and it took the violent collision of those elements repeatedly to form the planet.  The big bang is the violent explosion that marks the creation of the universe – creation and life are violent in nature, there have been five great mass extinctions in Earth’s history. The Permian mass extinction has been nicknamed The Great Dying, since a staggering 96% of species died out. All life on Earth today is descended from the 4% of species that survived. It is in this explosive violence life bloomed and flourished for the 4%, it is the violence of the eagle, the shark and the lion and makes life flourish; when life is removed a space opens up to be filled.  This is how the universe works but it is not how humanity works.

For contrary to belief it is not our violent destructiveness that separates us from nature – for nature is violent destruction by necessity, but it is our opposite capacity our ability to build, create and imagine that separates us.  Nature would prefer to remove the most vulnerable from society, the sick, elderly and those with disabilities, by disease and predation – something humanity has always fought against, putting it in direct conflict with nature whose resources were always limited. It is the conflict between humanity and the universe that is the story of mankind.  It is humanity’s violent fight against the violence of nature that leads to war, nature’s resources were always limited and war, agriculture, science, medicine (especially vaccination and contraception) are the ways in which we have battled against this limitation.

This eternal battle between what is by necessity and what humans desire, created the fantasy of ideals, things that cannot exist in the violence of the universe but in the mind and hearts of men.

“All right,” said Susan. “I’m not stupid. You’re saying humans need… fantasies to make life bearable.”

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

“Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—”

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

“So we can believe the big ones?”

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

“They’re not the same at all!”

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME…SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

“Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what’s the point—”

MY POINT EXACTLY.” – Terry Pratchett Hogfather

In the creation of the fantasy of ideals, comes the possibility of their reality – not as material things to be found within the violence of the universe but as the immaterial spirit that can reside within the heart of mankind that causes it to put the needs of others first, to sacrifice their lives and their own desires for the benefit of future generations.

The extent to which justice, mercy and duty are real is the extent to which humanity believes in them not as something to be shown to them but as something to be shown to others. For the universe does not contain justice, mercy and duty  to give to us, only the hearts of men can contain these things when they show it to others.  The universe contains the violence of magic that changes a small white flower into a strawberry, a dying star into a life-giving planet yet it cannot contain what the hearts of men can contain, in its violent magic of creation it created something beyond itself. The universe cannot contain justice, mercy and compassion but it did create and contain its possibility in the form of man.

This is Neptune in aspect to the Sun, the dynamic of who we are as part of the violent magic of creation and our possibilities of being the only thing able to hold justice, mercy and duty within it.  We contain both the violence of the magic of creation and the fantastic possibilities of justice, mercy and duty in a universe which cannot possibly contain them yet contains us. We are the riddle that is unsolvable for we by our very nature are the embodiment of nature’s paradox.

For we contain two opposing yet vital concepts, the violence of creation and the ability to show justice, mercy and duty where none exists and it is the ego which battles to contain both and to be both concepts made flesh.  It is the ego that must solve the riddle of how we can express the creative violence inherent in ourselves and the universe yet at the same exact moment show justice, mercy and duty and that is a difficult task that we all struggle with everyday and one in which it is difficult for us to ever to be able to do.  However it is in our failure to be ever able to do this completely, that we are capable of showing justice, mercy and duty – for justice, mercy and duty can only be shown to others in recognition of our own failures.  It is our failure to live up to our ideals that means we can actually fulfil them because of this humanity will always be a paradox within a paradox with all the complexity and potential that contains.
