2015 – The Third and Final Tale of the Spirit of the Bells   Leave a comment

The tale of the Selkie Clan

Once there was a young boy who went to sea on his father’s boat when there arose a great storm, so wild and desperate the boat capsized. Being green and not having the sense to swallow the water and sink to the embrace of the sea bed, he struggled on in the bitter cold violently thrashing until in her fury the sea refused to take him and spat him out upon the beach.

Half frozen to death he was found upon the beach where he claimed he was carried by a selkie through the waters as black as the night.  The young lad survived and regained his strength until one day he again returned to the sea in a small rowing boat.  Out at sea on the rocks he saw the most amazing sight a selkie shedding her seal fur to take human form. slowly and quietly he sneaked up stealing her fur: for without her fur she could not return once more to the sea and as long as he held it she would remain his selkie bride.  She stayed with him for many years and had children until one day her youngest child asked why her father kept a leather jacket hidden in the loft and the selkie found her skin and returned once more to the sea, but still to be found in the Hebrides and Ireland are the descendants of the selkie bride.

It is only in fighting with the sea until his rejection does the young lad earn the right to the selkie bride, Jacob wrestles God to earn the title ‘Israel’ – he who struggles with God.  But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.”

As the year begins with Saturn entering Sagittarius we will all have to wrestle with our ideals, beliefs and with the divine.  This may be the fight of our lives and the future of humanity may depend on our ability to hold on and fight through to reclaim our rights.  The last century saw us move from a feudal system to an infantile system what happens in this century may depend on what we are capable of achieving next year. Before we go on to next year lets look at the last century to see where we are first.

At the beginning of the century there were struggles for the working classes to get the vote, for women to get the vote later for black south African to get the vote. In some countries the feudal system was overthrown and pseudo communism replaced it. In both the democratic and communist countries the people became more infantilised by the state, the politicians taking on the role of parents and the population encouraged to become children.  Make no mistake I am not claiming socialist policies such as health care, education or social security infantilised the population rather that both the right and left continuously sought to infantilise them regardless of policy for their own ends.  Both left and right wing parties became indistinguishable and under the control of major corporations and financial systems and the only way to do this was to create an increasingly infantilised population incapable of stopping them.  The worst part of this tragedy is that the government and corporations themselves are run by infantilised individuals no longer capable of making adult decisions or taking responsibility for their own actions.  Humanity is run by adult children pretending to be adults and insisting all adults remain children and this paradox is slowly destroying us.

This leads us to where we are now; we are living in a time when we idolise our infantile state as being enlightenment and paradisical.  We are bombarded with memes that tell us that being an adult sucks and being a child is sublime – never leave your infantile state because taking control of your life and deciding what is best for you might cause you to get a bobo on your thumb or even worse you might have to learn to look before you cross the road.  Time to wrestle these beliefs and cross the road all by yourself because somewhere on the other side something better could be waiting but if you never trust your ability to cross the road by yourself you will never find out what is waiting at the other side.
