Ascendant in Aries   Leave a comment

I The MUL.APIN was a comprehensive tableof the risings and settings of stars.

Modern-day Aries was known as MULLÚ.ḪUN.GÁ, “The Agrarian Worker” or “The Hired Man”.

The earliest identifiable reference to Aries as a distinct constellation comes from the boundary stones that date from 1350 to 1000 BCE.

On several boundary stones, a zodiacal ram figure is distinct from the other characters present. The shift in identification from the constellation as the Agrarian Worker to the Ram likely occurred in later Babylonian tradition because of its growing association with Dumuzid the shepherd. By the time the MUL.APIN was created—by 1000 BCE—modern Aries was identified with both Dumuzi’s ram and a hired laborer. The exact timing of this shift is difficult to determine due to the lack of images of Aries or other ram figures.

In ancient Egyptian astrology, Aries was associated with the god Amon-Ra, who was depicted as a man with a ram’s head and represented fertility and creativity. Because it was the location of the vernal equinox, it was called the “Indicator of the Reborn Sun”.  In ancient Greek mythology, the constellation of Aries is associated with the golden ram that rescued Phrixos and Helle on orders from Hermes.

Those with Aries ascendant may appear, fiery, passionate, enthusiastic, bold, aggressive, daring, brave or reckless.

The ascendant is expressed when we are focused completely on something beyond ourselves.  For example children completely engrossed in playing or watching television lose all thought of themselves as an individual and resort to their natural state of just being. It is only when they become aware of the fact that they are being observed does the sun and other aspects of the chart kick in to protect the vulnerability of the ascendant.  The ascendant is vulnerable because it represents who we are before social conditioning and peer pressure kicked in it was our first expression as babies content in just being. Those with their ascendant in Aries are likely to find it easier to just be when they are participating in challenges, competing, participating in extreme sports, pioneering a new project, expressing their creativity and exploring.  Descendant in Libra, the descendant represents our relationship to our peers and how we act in their presence.  Descendant in Libra may appear sociable, amicable, indecisive, graceful, elegant and stylish.

The longer we know friends, the more we will relax enough to show our ascendant side of our personality.  This is also true of work and social situations where we will show our MC and look to impress others until we feel secure enough to relax.
